Molly - February 26, 2003

I share with GRRACE the sad news that Molly II crossed over the rainbow bridge last evening, Feb. 26, two weeks after her 12th birthday. I sensed something was wrong with her last month and took her to the vet twice for exams, blood work, etc., but her exams and blood work all looked normal. Still, I could tell she was slowing down and struggling to find her get up and go. I didn't realize, however, that she would cross over quite so soon. There was internal bleeding that could not be stopped. The poor girl's diaphragm was working like a bellows at full blast trying to compensate for her failed lungs.

Despite it all, the tail was wagging, and she savored the honey turkey and peanut butter Girl Scout cookie that were to be her final treats. She fell gently asleep with her head in my arms at 5:45 p.m. I was grateful the end came quickly, painlessly and in the presence of people who loved her.

Molly II taught us all a thing or two about resiliency...the triumph of a strong spirit in the face of adversity...and the value of second
chances. Here's a toast to our "used dogs," who have shown us it's never too late to enjoy what's left of life.

Thank you for entrusting this angel girl to us.
