We
only knew Truman for one year and eight months of his ten years, but that was
more than enough to fall in love with this golden gentleman.
He had been in several homes, but we were fortunate to be the final home
for him, and for Sierra, his companion of several years.
Truman
loved taking walks, watching the neighborhood activities from our back yard,
sleeping with our son Chris when home from college, rides in the car, treats,
and hanging out in Bob's basement office with him and our sons who work there.
But
the happiest we ever saw Truman was during the two-week vacation we spent in a
cottage on Lake Michigan this summer. He
had been diagnosed with cancer about six weeks earlier, and we weren't sure how his health would be for the trip.
We decided to try to find someone who would be willing to take over our
Michigan reservation, but found no one. Since
Truman's health had not deteriorated, we loaded him,
Sierra, and our new GRRACE dog, Apollo, into the van, and headed north.
All
three had a wonderful time, but Truman was totally rejuvenated.
He had more energy than we had ever seen him have before. He loved
exploring the beach and playing in the sand with the other dogs. It was a miracle. And
to think that we almost didn't
go!
Seeing
Truman's health decline soon after this trip was very hard, and we will always miss him. But we are very grateful for the memories we have of all our
time with him. We know our lives
have been enriched by having loved, and been loved, by Truman, our golden
gentleman.
