Manny is a sweet 63-lb boy estimated to be 2 years old with quite a story to tell. Manny was found as a stray and cared for in a home for two months before being surrendered to Indianapolis Animal Care Services. IACS knew Manny’s medical needs were more than they could accommodate, so Manny made his way to GRRACE on June 13th. Manny’s Foster Mom is one of GRRACE’s favorite vet techs, so Friday June 13 was a lucky day for Manny!
Where do we begin with Manny’s issues? He is a very sick boy with an abnormally high body temperature despite days of antibiotics. All four of his extremities are swollen. Manny has multiple skin wounds that are open and oozing and has abscesses on his head and face. He has generalized pain everywhere but is finally learning that gentle touches mean his Foster Mom is helping him feel better. Manny is very itchy—9/10 on itchiness scale—and has to wear a cone to prevent him from scratching open his wounds. His lungs look awful, and he is coughing a lot. Manny is very underweight—his rib and hip bones are visible—and his appetite is hit or miss.
Sadly, on June 19th Manny tested positive for Blastomycosis and has a long, difficult, expensive journey in front of him. Blastomycosis is fungal infection caused by the fungus Blastomyces dermatitidis, commonly found in soil, particularly near water sources. Dogs contract the disease by inhaling spores from the environment, and the spores reproduce and spread through the dog’s body.
Blastomycosis can be treated but with varying survival rates. Manny was already in poor shape when he came to GRRACE, so we don’t know
how long he’s been fighting this ugly, very painful disease. We consider him in “guarded prognosis” but we refuse to give up our fight for Manny. He will be in GRRACE foster care for many months, likely 6-9 months if not longer.
As of this writing, Manny has been with GRRACE about 10 days, and his medical expenses are about $1,000. That amount will continue to grow over the upcoming months. Would you consider helping GRRACE help Manny by donating to his care? Any donation amount is greatly appreciated. You can donate to Manny via check, PayPal, or Venmo and noting Manny on your donation. https://www.grrace.org/donate
